The new space will unify services, expand care offerings, and allow more people to be served, with a special focus on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
Construction of the new BCN Checkpoint is underway. The future center, located at the intersection of Carrer Sepúlveda and Carrer del Comte d’Urgell, will become, in the coming months, the largest community space in Europe specializing in sexual health for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, as well as trans people.
This project is the result of collaboration between two leading organizations: Projecte dels NOMS-Hispanosida, the driving force behind BCN Checkpoint and BCN PrEP·Point, and the Fundació Lluita contra les Infeccions. Construction is expected to last one year and will culminate in the launch of an innovative, accessible, and inclusive center.
The main goal of the new space is to strengthen European leadership in the community response to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In addition to unifying the services of Checkpoint and PrEP·Point in a single space, the center will also incorporate specialized services such as proctology and urology consultations.
“This new center will allow us to serve more people, reduce waiting lists to access PrEP, and offer more comprehensive medical services from a community perspective, focusing on the rights and real needs of the community,” stated BCN Checkpoint management.
Planned opening in 2026
The new BCN Checkpoint is expected to open in mid-2026, occupying 1,700 square meters across four floors, with consultation rooms, extraction rooms, and spaces for workshops and community activities.
Why is a new center necessary?
Currently, BCN Checkpoint serves over 8,000 users each year and conducts around 14,000 tests annually, with a growing demand that has exceeded the current facility’s capacity. With the new facility, the goal is to increase service capacity and reduce waiting times, particularly for initiating pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
Services also for trans people
One of the key new features of the BCN Checkpoint will be the expansion of specific services for trans people, a group with high vulnerability to HIV and other STIs, as well as the inclusion of services adapted to their specific health needs.
New integrated services
The new center will offer rapid testing for HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis, access to PrEP and PEP, psychological care and social support, as well as vaccination services for hepatitis A and B and the human papillomavirus (HPV). It will also strengthen the monitoring and treatment of syphilis and gonorrhea through new early diagnosis pathways.
A project with a community focus
With this initiative, BCN Checkpoint reinforces its commitment to closer, more effective, and stigma-free sexual health, offering a real response to the current challenges of HIV, STIs, and the care of sexual and gender diversity. According to the organizations leading the project, the goal is to “place people at the center of care in a welcoming, stigma-free space.”
