On June 11, 2025, the team at Projecte dels NOMS-Hispanosida gathered at Cosmocaixa to celebrate the 5th Internal Conference. Professionals and volunteers shared a day of intense work, but also of exchange, cohesion, and strategic thinking towards the future.
The main goals of the meeting were to review the milestones achieved over the past year, share data and results, and outline action plans for the coming months. All of this was done with a clear intention to continue offering an accessible, safe, and community-responsive service.
“It is unacceptable that someone who wants to protect themselves from HIV cannot do so in time. Institutional responsibility and urgency are essential.”
Key Data and Urgent Challenges
One of the most significant moments came with the presentation of data on seroconversions among individuals on the waiting list to start PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis). Estimates suggest that, over the coming year, around a dozen people could acquire HIV while waiting to access this preventive treatment. This reality once again highlighted the urgency of addressing the issue of waiting lists.
Key Presentations and Alliances
The fast-paced and comprehensive program included presentations on essential services such as HIV clinical visits, vaccination services, care for vulnerable populations, and new diagnostic prediction tools. Speakers such as Eugènia Negredo from the Fundació Lluita contra les Infeccions, and the team from the Transit Unit of the Catalan Institute of Health — Lina Mulero and Jordi Reviriego — brought valuable and rigorous external perspectives.
The training session provided by Trànsit focused on healthcare for trans* and non-binary people based on respect, autonomy, and depathologization. A model that aligns with the values BCN Checkpoint has defended and practiced for years.
Communication, Volunteering, and Shared Vision
Beyond clinical services, the event also included spaces to rethink the organization’s communication strategies and to strengthen volunteer engagement. These are key aspects to ensure that the message reaches those who need it and that the community feels like an active part of the project.
As has become tradition, the event was held at Cosmocaixa with the support of “la Caixa” Foundation, a regular partner of BCN Checkpoint. And, as a symbolic and relaxing closing activity, attendees visited the exhibition “Extraterrestrials”, a brief cultural pause in the middle of a busy workday.
A Future that Meets the Needs
After a day marked by reflection, transparency, and learning, the conclusion is clear: Checkpoint continuously works to stay current, adapt to changing needs, and provide high-quality service to the community.
The 5th Internal Conference has not only been an update but also a collective reaffirmation of the commitment to sexual health, equality, and the dignity of all people. And now more than ever, that commitment is shared.
